Dear Nigerian Artistes...Here are 3 things You Should Learn From Adele

Usually, I respect our brand of Nigerian music, and will not bother with a comparison, because there really is no global standard for art.

But when, a Nigerian singer like Sean Tizzle decides to score points for ‘hyping’ Nigerian music/artistes by calling Adele’s rendition of her song ‘Hello’ weak, then I have a problem.

However, this post isn’t entirely about Sean Tizzle (even if he did inspire it), it is about what lessons our Nigerian musicians can learn from Adele.
  • Take Your Time – Dropping an album every other week won’t get you 230 million views like Adele. Our dear artistes need to learn to take their time in creating music…After all, it is ‘quality over quantity’
  • Use Meaningful Lyrics – Notice how meaningful and relatable Adele’s ‘Hello’ is? Singing ‘Oh na na na na’ and ‘let me be your maga’ can only take you so far. No offense to Wizkid or KCee.
  • It’s Okay to Work With A Songwriter- I know it makes an artiste feel extra special to be able to write his own songs, but come on, is it not better you get help writing a great song, than to write ‘ti ni ni ta na na’ in the name of pride. Adele had a songwriter work on ‘Hello’ and look where that got her…
PS: You really don’t want to be Sean Tizzle right now, look at some of the responses he got for his ill-worded tweet.
Ouch…
